Selecting a Wheelchair and Scooter Lift

If you’re shopping for a wheelchair and scooter lift, the first thing you should do is talk with your doctor. It may seem silly, as a wheel chair lift is more of a practical necessity, but it is still a medical necessity.

Make sure you’ve cleared the purchase with your doctor first. Usually this means that the doctor has issued a prescription for both a wheel chair or scooter as well as a lift. This way, you can have Medicare or your insurance provider cover the costs of the lift at no expense to yourself. Medicare and most other insurance providers will not reimburse a purchase, so make sure that you get this out of the way early on.

Covering your Assets

Beyond that, just make sure that your needs are covered. Just as you made sure that your wheelchair or scooter was designed to fit your needs and preferences, make sure that the same is true of your lift.

Check the user manual or the manufacturer’s website and make a note of how much your scooter or chair weighs. The last thing you want is for your lift to be unable to handle the weight of your scooter. If you have a lighter scooter, you’d also be better off not investing the gas money in hauling around a heavy duty lift.

Portability and Scooter Lifts

Even if you can easily tuck your wheel chair or scooter into the trunk of your vehicle, the bed of your truck or the back of your van, a good lift still offers convenience and saves time whenever you’re ready to hit the road.

As an added bonus, there is no heavy lifting involved. Putting a wheelchair into the back of a car generally requires one or two strong lifters, and sometimes, that’s just not an option.

Another important thing to consider when selecting a wheelchair and scooter lift is personal preference. If you own a van and a car, for example, think of which one you’d prefer to do most of your traveling in and select a lift accordingly.

There is a lift for every chair and a lift for every lifestyle, and with the variety available to select from, there’s no reason not to get the absolute best lift you can find to suit your needs.
