Selecting a 3 Wheel or 4 Wheel
Mobility Scooter

When deciding whether to purchase a four wheeler or a 3 wheel mobility scooter, you’ll want to take a few things into consideration.

The benefits of a three wheeler . . .

Maneuverability

This is the most notable and obvious. A three wheel scooter is capable of making much sharper turns, meaning that it’s one of the best options available for those who intend to use their scooters in indoor environments. A four wheeler will usually have problems making tight corners, and don’t even think of getting in and out of the bathroom without making a three point turn. A three wheeler is simply easier to maneuver.
Lightweight

A three wheeled scooter can be more easily transported. A strong individual is likely to be able to simply lift the smaller 3 wheeler up and stick it in the trunk of the car, the bed of the trunk, or the back of a van. Depending on your model, it may be wise to invest in a scooter lift whether you have a three wheeler or a four wheeler. However, if this investment is something you wish to avoid, consider a 3 wheel scooter.

Battery Size

A lighter, three wheeled scooter requires less battery power to stay on the road. That means a somewhat smaller electricity bill at the end of the month, as well as shorter charge periods for the battery.

The benefits of a four wheeler . . .

Horsepower

This may seem like a small issue. After all, it’s a scooter, not a sports car! However, an extra point or two of horsepower will make a scooter much more versatile when it comes to traversing varied terrain or climbing somewhat steep inclines. There has been some development with three wheelers to this end, as well. One three wheeler example is the PaceSaver Fusion, which mixes the maneuverability of a three wheeler with the strength of a four wheeler. In general, however, you need four wheelers if you want to operate a truly heavy duty scooter.

Comfort

Simply put, the larger frame, the fourth wheel, and the heavy duty suspension make for a more comfortable ride. The greater shock absorbency offered by many varieties of four wheel scooters makes for a smoother, more enjoyable ride.
